The Sportshall West Midlands Regional Championship Final was dominated by Team Birmingham at the weekend. Nine of the team were Birchfield athletes, all of whom took home a medal or three. The team was up against other cities in the Midlands and performed exceptionally well to win the Regional Title.
Competitors from the U13 girls included Lauryn Walker and Jayda Regis in the 2 Lap race, gaining a Silver and Bronze medal respectively. In addition to this a Silver medal went to Jayda in the SP, whilst Lauryn (2.32 pb) went on to take a Gold in the SLJ – Atiyah Skeete took the Bronze (2.11). A STJ Gold was taken by Lemeyah Issac (6.78 pb) to complete the individual medals.
To round up their successful day, the leagues undefeated 4×2 quartet Atiyah, Jayda, Lemeyah, and Lauryn all contributed to a final team victory.
The U13 Boys included Zachary Elliott who took the Silver in the SVJ and 4×1 Relay, whilst Alex Ross took the Gold over the 8 Lap Paarlauf.
On the U15 Boys team, all rounder champion Tyrell Williamson-Greene also took home a collection of medals – the most of day. He won Silver in the SP, Bronze in the STJ and Gold in the 4 Lap, and a 4×2 Gold.
With Birchfield Coach Brian Holyfield as Team Manager, the U15 Girls also performed well. Nichole Birmingham took Silver in the SP and SLJ, she then topped this with a Gold medal in the 4×2 Relay, alongside team mate Kia Stewart Morrison.
A significant number of the Birchfield athletes are coached by Sharon Morris who said, “I am extremely delighted with my squad’s contribution to an overwhelming victory for Team Birmingham in all age groups. They have trained extremely hard and there is a good team spirit in the group. I spotted the potential of all these athletes from the AGA Academy and they have done themselves proud.”
The next stage will be the National Final which will take place on the 5th and 6th April in Manchester. We hope to see most of these athletes in the team. This team will be announced soon after the final league match, on the 7th March.
