NATIONAL XC CHAMPIONSHIPS SATURDAY 25th FEBRUARY 2017
WOLLATON PARK, NOTTINGHAM
Being the year of the Midlands to hold this event brought athletes from all over the country making it a very busy venue and now the course is located in the wilder areas of Wollaton Park there was no shortage of mud, even athletes competing early in the day were returning plastered from head to toe giving warning to those yet to run.
We had one woman in the Junior race of which there were 148 finishers, Fian Sweeney a first year Student at Exeter University made the long journey back just two weeks after helping us secure victory in the Midland Women’s league. Securing a place in the front echelon of runners from the gun she had a tremendous run to finish 9th by far the performance of the day for Birchfield.
The senior women’s race was best forgotten from a team point of view. First home was Nicole Roberts who is on a two month placement in central London but some distance away from the big Parks and is finding it difficult to train properly , she was 48th.
Katie Allen despite winning the last Midland league race was completely out of sorts and finished 87th not best pleased.
Ellie Stevens is still coming back to full fitness so wasn’t too disappointed with 97th. Frances Vickers had no form guide never having competed in this event before was 309th. with Nicola Ross 402nd.
There were an incredible 788 finishers and we were 15th team from 93 complete teams.
