As the London 2017 fast approaches Birchfield Harriers has launched its “Search for a Star 2017” campaign, supported by One Stop Shopping.

The campaign aimed at 9-16 year olds hopes to identify the next Denise Lewis, Mark Lewis-Francis or Katharine Merry who are just some of the club’s Olympic medallists. Supported by One Stop Shopping, the Perry Barr shopping centre, the winning two athletes judged to have the most potential at an event on 21 June will receive a year’s training with Birchfield Harriers.

Winners will be decided at an athletics evening to be held at the Birmingham Alexander Stadium on Wednesday 21st June starting at 5.30pm. During the evening 9-13 year olds will take part in a quad kids event where they will run, jump and throw aided by Birchfield coaches and athletes. Anyone aged 14-16 years will take part in a variety of events with coaching support to enable them to try new events and demonstrate their ability in favoured events.

To enter the competition youngsters should sign up to attend the athletics evening here  or via the One Stop website Birchfield athletes and coaches will also be onsite at One Stop on 11th, 20th, 29th May and 6 June for potential athletes to register and find out more about the event.

Cath Muth Coach and Commercial Manager at Birchfield commented:

“I am delighted to be able to launch our “Search for a Star 2017” and thank One Stop Shopping for their support which means we can offer the winning athletes a fantastic prize of 12 months free training. Birmingham is a great city for sport and we are always looking out for the next Olympian and I am sure there are youngsters with the talent in our city to develop to this level. The event in June will give lots of youngsters the opportunity to try our sport and see if they have a future in athletics. I look forward to welcoming all those who want to enjoy an evening where they can try lots of different disciplines.”
