This was my first time as Team Manager to both the male and female teams in the Midland League so I knew that it could either go well or be a disaster.  Fortunately for me I got a lot of support from coaches and athletes and although we did not have a full team everyone who had committed to this fixture turned up and competed extremely well to make the day a success.

The weather was much different to the last time we were in Yate last year when our YDL match was rained off.  The sun beat down relentlessly but we had numerous personal and seasonal bests.  I met athletes and parents for the first time and found all of them delighted that they/their children had been asked to compete.  We also took Javaughn Parks who has cerebral palsy and he needed races to get times.  Javaughn enjoyed the experience.

We had 2 amazing performances on the day.  U17 athlete Ryan Shields had stepped up to the U20 age group in the YDL 1500m last weekend and won it with a personal best of 4.15.31s.  That was a fantastic run for him. However, Ryan was not finished with running a personal best last week as he turned out for the Midland League team in the 1500m, in the boiling hot sun, and ran a stunning 4.06.8s taking almost 9 seconds off his 1 week old personal best!   After taking that in our 4 x 100m men’s relay team of Alwayne Campbell, Kaie Chambers Brown, Charles Hilliard and Fabian Batchelor ran an amazing 41.96s to break the League and Divisional record (subject to scrutiny).  Apart from Fabian all the athletes were U20.

So first match done and dusted and we could not have asked for more.  We finished 2nd on the day by 26 points and hopefully the next match we will have a few more athletes.

I would like to thank the officials, the coaches and their athletes for their support for the League.
